Does your sales process yield the results your engineering excellence deserves?

Engineering manufacturers: does our sales process match the level of detail given to our manufacturing processes?



We know that if one small tolerance 📐 is off in production, the resulting product is far from satisfactory. A "make-do" attitude doesn't cut it on the shop floor, and it shouldn't for our sales operations either - they are just as vital!


If we continue to apply the same logic to a failing sales process, or to an unsupported team member who is silently struggling, why are we surprised when they yield the same poor results 📉 - or worse?


🧠 Albert Einstein once said: "We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used to create them." So, where do we start?


First, we have to commit to being honest 🔍 in our approach and be determined to allow ourselves to be challenged out of our comfort zone 🏃. We can then run an audit against our current sales operations.


Here are some questions to help:

What are we selling? This isn't our product or service offering -

it’s the value it creates.

Who are we selling to? Are we chasing "everyone" or do we have a defined ‘Best Customer Profile’?

How is sales positioned? Is it viewed as a core professional discipline or an afterthought in our organisation?

What is the friction? Can we clearly identify what is working versus what is failing?

What are the aspirations? What are the current specific goals for each area, team, and individual to realise these?

What is our SWOT? Have we mapped the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats for every area, team, and individual?


Once we have identified the blockages 🚧, we can prioritise what to address and set meaningful goals 🎯.
